Job Summary
The Ophthalmologist Assistant assists the Ophthalmologist in the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases. Work includes assisting the physician with ophthalmic procedures; performing, organizing and filing results of visual fields testing using the Allergen Humphrey Field Analyzer; performing Intraocular Lens calculations to prepare patients for cataract surgery; measuring and recording visual acuity; obtaining conjunctival swabs/cultures as per the direction of the ophthalmologist; preparing ophthalmic procedure trays for sterilization; ensuring ophthalmic medications are ordered weekly and checked for expiry date; organizing and maintaining bookings for visual field testing; providing instruction and written information to patients undergoing visual field testing and other procedures; and performing other related duties necessary to ensure efficient day-to-day operation of the Eye Clinic. The Ophthalmic Assistant also contributes to Ambulatory Program goals by participating in educational events, annual reviews, staff meetings and serving on committees of interest.

Job Demands
By applying for this job, you acknowledge an understanding that regular requirements and demands of this job include (but are not limited to):
Occasionally moves/lifts objects less than 10 lbs. and provide assistance to assist patients from wheelchairs or stretchers onto the procedural table which requires gross motor skills.
Constantly stands and walks while performing ophthalmic testing.
Using hand tools require accurate control and steadiness while assisting with ophthalmic procedures (holding small instruments in place while the physician operates).
Alertness and concentration required while frequently completing repetitive tasks and constant auditory/visual concentration.

Job Qualifications
Graduation from high school or equivalent.
Successful completion of a recognized/approved Ophthalmic Assistant Certificate Program.
Completion of a Medical Terminology course is required.
Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a team member.
A satisfactory record of work performance is required.
