Janeway Children's Hosptial

Eastern Health provides health services to the communities that make up the Avalon, Burin and Bonavista Peninsulas. Volunteers of these communities donate their time in many of the acute, community and long-term care sites to enhance the health care and service provided to our clients, patients, residents and their families.
The Janeway Resource Centre (JRC), formerly the Colonel Harland Sanders Pediatric Family Resource Centre, is a small resource centre that focuses on pediatric and women's health information. At the centre, you can;
" Learn more about medical conditions or general health and wellbeing
" Find storybooks, novels and workbooks for children and teens to understand their illness, diagnosis or treatment
" Relax in a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere outside of the hospital environment.


This position involves being on the nursing units and different clinic areas around the hospital, interacting with patients in a group or one to one setting. Being comfortable to approach a child or their families to inquire about the child coming to a group reading or reading in a child's room.
Candidates should:
" Be able to volunteer individually
" Be outgoing

Orientation: An orientation to Eastern Health will be provided by the Coordinator of Volunteer Resources. An orientation to the assigned area will be provided by the unit or area staff or designate as required. All volunteers are required to attend these orientation sessions prior to beginning any volunteer assignment.

Training: Additional training for this assignment will be provided as required by designated staff.


Attire: Comfortable and professional clothing, volunteer uniform (if provided) and Eastern Health issued identification badge.

Evaluation: Your open and honest feedback about your volunteer experience is encouraged. Consult the coordinator for Volunteer Resources about your experience, expectations and concerns.

Safety: Safety is a priority for Eastern Health. Volunteers must ensure that safety for patients, residents, clients, employees and themselves is paramount in the workplace. Any and all safety concerns must be reported to the unit staff or the coordinator for Volunteer Resources immediately.
