Job Summary
This is a specialized and unique psychology position with Eastern Health and is currently the only psychologist position in the province's health system to provide these services. The Psychologist III provides specialty diagnostic and treatment services to clients receiving or seeking Women's Health Services, including bereavement services for individuals and couples experiencing a perinatal loss through miscarriage, still birth, or therapeutic abortion; assessment and therapy for those at risk or experiencing post-partum depression, fertility issues, anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. It includes inpatient and outpatient populations.
This position is responsible for administering, monitoring, evaluating, and revising the Perinatal Bereavement Program for clients and their families following the loss of a baby. This position is unique in the province and serves as a resource to psychologists and other workers across the province in the area of perinatal loss, grief and bereavement. The Psychologist III functions autonomously and requires extensive and specialized training and experience in bereavement (normal and complicated), post-traumatic stress disorder and debriefing, post-partum depression, health psychology and women's issues. S/he must also determine the needs of staff in the program who may be vicariously traumatized by a client's situation. The psychologist must be prepared to develop and evaluate education and/or debriefing sessions to aid staff in preventing and/or coping with these situations.
The Psychologist III provides consultation and clinical direction to psychologists throughout the province. Supervision of Psychology students, residents, and provisionally registered Psychologists.
This position uses high level critical thinking and independent analysis and judgment in analyzing complex presenting problems and determining diagnosis and appropriate intervention. This position operates with a significant degree of initiative and leadership within the context of a program based approach, reporting to the Division Manager, and maintains accountability to the Professional Practice Consultant for Psychology for professional integrity and practice issues.

Occasionally, there is lifting or physical strength required, less than 10 lbs for files, boxes, or equipment.
Regularly sits; occasionally works in awkward/cramped positions, and stands to facilitate or teach groups.
Uses fine finger/precision work when on the computer and visual concentration is required when in sessions with patients (i.e. reviewing patient charts/notes, tests and for documenting work, and when reading or researching information).
Visual concentration is required to interpret patient observations and integrate into patient evaluation.
Auditory concentration is constantly required in sessions with patients to listen attentively, to be alert and to obtain and interpret information correctly.
A higher-than-normal level of attentiveness is required when assessing high risk patients.
Job Qualifications
Graduation with an approved/recognized Doctorate Degree in Clinical Psychology is required.
Registration or provisional registration with Newfoundland and Labrador Psychology Board is required.
Graduate course work and supervised experience in psychological assessment and therapy with adult, couples and groups is required.
Experience in grief, bereavement, fertility and women's health issues is preferred.
Exhibited strong communication, program development and evaluation skills.
Possessed strong leadership and supervisory skills that are focused on engaging others and developing coalitions.
Demonstrated ability and/or experience in supervising Psychology Practicum students, Psychology residents, and/or Provisionally registered Psychologists.
Possessed strong analytical, critical reasoning, collaboration, problem solving, decision-making and organizational skills.
Demonstrated ability to effectively translate and communicate knowledge in the specialized area of psychology practice to others.
Demonstrated ability to conduct research, deliver lectures/clinical education sessions and provide clinical direction and consultation within an interprofessional environment.
Ability to work autonomously, prioritizing caseloads and client needs.
Demonstrated ability and willingness to participle in the clinical training activities of the psychology discipline.
Demonstrated strong awareness of ethical principles and standards of professional conduct.
A satisfactory record of work performance and attendance is required.
