Job Summary
The Genetic Counsellor III works within the Centre for Translational Genomics (CTG), based in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. The primary focus of the Genetic Counsellor is to assist the Laboratory Medical Director to develop next-generation sequencing testing (e.g., test design, development, and validation), assist in writing and customizing patients' reports, assist with variant classifications, assist with the selection, ordering, and results interpretation of genetic testing for ordering clinics/physicians and partner laboratories, responsible for the development of laboratory-related documentation (including but not limited to consent forms and requisitions), and other related duties as specified by the Laboratory Medical Director.
The Genetic Counsellor is an integral member of an interprofessional team providing specialized genetic expertise within a laboratory setting, including medical specialists. The Counsellor works with a high level of autonomy and independence. There is close collaboration with the Provincial Medical Genetics Program Genetic Counsellors and Medical Geneticists. Work is supervised and cosigned by the clinical Director of the CTG.
Job Demands

A high level of alertness and concentration is required when documenting client information and conducting counselling sessions in consultation with the Geneticist or individually.
Occasionally works in awkward positions, requires constant sitting and occasional standing/walking.
Regularly uses fine finger precision work to operate the computer mouse.
Regularly, lifts objects less than 10 lbs.
Job Qualifications
Master's Degree in Genetic Counselling is required.
Board certification or eligibility for certification with Canadian Association of Genetic Counsellors (CAGC) and/or American Board of Genetic Counselling (ABGC) is required. This certification must be successfully completed within 18 months of hire.
Familiarity with the provision of telephone and Telehealth genetic counselling is an asset.
Demonstrated ability to work independently.
Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills, case and time management skills, analytical skills, and the ability to work both independently and as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
Demonstrated strong computer skills including the ability to use Windows and Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to become proficient using new computer programs.
A satisfactory record of work performance is required.
