Job Summary
This is a highly responsible and specialized position within the License Practical Nurse Discipline in Correctional Health Services. A high level of autonomy is required.
The Psychiatric Licensed Practical Nurse III will participate in the development of nursing a care plan to meet the client's needs, and assist in the release planning of clients who are incarcerated in collaboration with a multidisciplinary health team and Classifications Officers. Release planning begins upon admission to a correctional facility to ensure clients are prepared for release. The LPN case manager will be working with incarcerated clients to assist in ensuring health and social supports are in place upon release and will provide education to clients regarding health treatments, follow up health appointments, and community resources.
Close liaisons with Eastern Health in-patient/community programs, Legal Aid, Private Lawyers, Provincial Court, Adult Corrections, community agencies and funding agencies is also a requirement.
Job Demands

Accept transfer of case, review clinical records and engage client in a therapeutic working relationship.
Assess for risk. Assessments include: relapse in illness/addiction, suicide, risk to reoffend and for violent behavior. Assessment will be ongoing from opening to closing case.
Review, amend and revise treatment plans, safety plans and goals on client's request.
Teaching of Activities of Daily Living skills.
Provide resource counselling
Complete referrals to other agencies.
Be proficient in intra-muscular injections and phlebotomy
Testify in Mental Health Court.
Regularly required to climb stairs and move quickly in a variety of environments (depending upon location).
Regularly exposed to volatile clients whose behavior is sometimes unpredictable.
Job Qualifications
Successful completion of an approved Licensed Practical Nursing program is required.
Current and continuing licensure with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador (CLPNNL) is required.
Completion of a Post-Basic Psychiatric LPN Diploma is required.
One year recent experience (within the last five) in Adult Psychiatric Rehabilitation, Acute Care or Ambulatory Care Psychiatry is required.
Knowledge of specific psychiatric approaches, i.e., supportive counselling, skills teaching, crisis intervention.
Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to maintain effective working relationships.
Demonstrated initiative and the ability to work independently.
A valid Newfoundland and Labrador Class 5 Driver's License and the use of a private vehicle are conditions of employment.
A satisfactory record of work performance and attendance is required.
